A Novel Method of testing Cholesterol Unveiled

Thursday 27 September 2012 - Filed under Canada Pharmacy

A novel method for testing cholesterol levels in the blood has been developed by researchers in India. In a report published in International Journal of Medical Engineering and Informatics, N.R. Shanker of the Sree Sastha Institute of Engineering and Technology and his team describe how the new method works. A digital photograph of the backhand of the patient is compared with a large number of backhand photographs of persons whose total cholesterol levels are known, stored in a database. As this inexpensive method does not involve taking blood samples and sophisticated equipment, it may be very useful in testing the cholesterol levels in patients living in rural communities.

New technique can be made to use a mobile phone camera for testing cholesterol. Shankar says that the software developed by them can be converted into a mobile app. Though the method can test for total cholesterol, researchers say they are extending the method to distinguish between the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). Testing for total cholesterol level, LDL and HDL levels is important as the high total cholesterol levels and LDL levels cause heart problems and increasing the risk of cerebral stroke. Availability of cheaper and simple methods to identify people with high total cholesterol levels and high LDL levels allows many people to take the test and be diagnosed in advance. This can prompt treatment with cholesterol lowering drugs, reducing the incidence of heart disease and strokes.

When diagnosed with high cholesterol levels, it may be possible to bring down the levels by lifestyle changes such as diet changes, exercise, decreasing alcohol intake and stopping smoking etc. For many, lifestyle changes may not be enough to correct the cholesterol levels. Cholesterol lowering medications are used when diet changes and exercise alone cannot lower the cholesterol levels and LDL levels. Some drugs can increase the HDL levels too. Drugs belonging to statin group like Aorvastatin (Lipitor), Lovastatin (Mevacor), Pravastatin (Pravachol), Simvastatin (Zocor) and Rosuvastatin (Crestor) are used as first line of drugs for lowering cholesterol. Niacin (Niaspan), a component in vitamin-B complex also is used to lower cholesterol and LDL levels.

Although many optional medications are available in the market, the high prices make it difficult for many patients to adhere to the prescriptions. A spokesperson for the reputed affiliated Canadian dispensing pharmacy, Big Mountain Drugs (BMD), said “We have all widely prescribed cholesterol lowering drugs in our catalogues. As we offer a choice of brand name drugs and generic versions, customers make huge savings. We offer generic Niaspan and generic Niaspan ER at greatly reduced prices.”

The price for 180 generic Niaspan ER 500 mg tablets in Big Mountain drugstore is $93.00 compared with the price of Niaspan bought at a retail pharmacy in US.

Speaking further on the effectiveness of the drug, the Chief pharmacist of BMD elaborated as “Niaspan is used alone or in combination with statins. Niaspan increases “good” high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in your body and also lowers the “bad” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides. It can reduce the chance of having another heart attack in patients with a prior history of heart attack and have high cholesterol.”
