Lantus (generic name: Insulin Glargine) is a long acting insulin analog used for treating type 1 and type2 diabetes patients. It has the advantage of not having a pronounced peak. Due to its long acting property, Lantus is used once daily and has a lower risk of nocturnal hypoglycemia. Marketed by Sanofi Aventis, Lantus is used by more than 3.5 million patients in 100 countries. There are unconfirmed reports hinting that a generic version of Lantus, will be available soon in Canada. If Insulin Glargine is made available as a generic drug the prices of the drug will fall significantly, making it more affordable to even the low income groups. The price of branded Lantus too will come down under pressure from generics.

Controlling the blood sugar levels in diabetes patients should be a complete program that includes drugs, dieting, exercise, weight control, and regular blood sugar tests. Diabetes drugs fall into three categories depending on what they do to bring down sugar levels. Some drugs affect food absorption, some drugs increase availability of insulin while other drugs increase the body’s responsiveness to insulin. Discovery of insulin in 1920s by a Canadian researcher Dr. Frederick Banting paved the way to save millions of diabetic patients from certain death. Until today, insulin analogs and insulin are the most widely used treatments for diabetic patients.

Commenting on Lantus and its popularity, Chief pharmacist of Big Mountain Drugs, a leading Canadian pharmacy had this to say:

“As most patients consider injecting insulin twice or thrice per day as an inconvenience, Lantus is very popular among them. It is a long acting insulin, so, patients need to get an injection once daily only”

Injection pens are less painful making them a popular among the insulin users. Lantus is available as 10 ml vials, 3ml cartridges and disposable injection pens. Lantus is a prescription drug in Canada, US and other countries.

Big Mountains Drugs (BMD) the leading Canadian online pharmacy offers a wide range of Canadian drugs including all types of diabetic medications. The spokesperson for Big Mountain Drugs said

“We have both brand name and generic drugs in our product range. Our prices are very competitive due to lower prices of drugs in Canada, and the sourcing strategies we follow. We buy the best quality drugs direct from reputed manufacturers from different countries and these suppliers are approved by Health Canada. On the average, prices of our drugs are about 65% lower than the prices in local retail pharmacies in US.”
