Merck & Co Inc. manufacturers of the new Zioptan eye medication informed its approval by the FDA. The Food and Drug Administration of the US approved Zioptan 0.0015% as the first preservative-free prostaglandin ophthalmic solution. Zioptan is an ophthalmic solution used for elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. As open angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma, Merck hoped to have Zioptan available for customers by March. “This medication is a new breakthrough for lowering eye pressure. The approval of the medication by the FDA provides a new, effective option to lower intraocular pressure” stated a spokesperson for Canada pharmacies. “Many IOP patients can now purchase this medication at discounted prices from our online pharmacies”.

FDA approval of the drug was a result of two years of intense controlled clinical studies conducted on 905 patients. Both preservative-containing and preservative-free formulations of tafluprost, the topical prostaglandin analogue and the main ingredient of the medication, were used in these studies. When the product was used once daily in the evening, for 3 to 6 months, it significantly reduced IOP by 6 mmHg to 8 mmHg and 5mmHg to 8 mmHg respectively. The starting eye pressure before the administration of the drug was 23 mmHg to 26 mmHg which is a substantial drop. The drug did come with a few adverse effects out of which the most significant was conjuctival hyperaemia in 4% to 20% of patients. Zioptan has also been known to cause eye pigmentation issues. It is believed that pigmentation issues may not be reversed even after the discontinuation of the drug. As a precaution patients prescribed with Zioptan should be aware of this fact and its long-term complications.

Merck expected Zioptan to be available to patients priced at $97 for a 30-day supply. This may be a steep sum for many IOP patients. However, with Zioptan becoming available to Canada Pharmacies, such as Big Mountain Drugs, IOP patients can now avail themselves of cheaper eye medication. Canada pharmacies pride themselves in supplying high quality medications at cheaper prices to their customers. They offer attractive discounts on already low priced medications by availing their customers the ability to use discount coupons through their partner site onlinepharmacycoupons.com. “If you are finding it hard to purchase essential medications, collect the coupons and you will be able to save almost 70% of your expense” stated the spokesperson for Canada Pharmacies. “In addition to this, you earn a reward of 5% of the total price that you can redeem with future purchases”.

Zioptan is available in brand and generic form at low prices from Big Mountain. The spokesperson for Canada Pharmacies, warns customers to be aware of “phony” online pharmacies. “These pharmacies will try and take the most out of you. Therefore, you need to be very careful about who you order your medication from. If you choose reputed companies such as Big Mountain for your pharmacy needs, you can be sure of receiving high quality, prescription medications”.
